This was my 7th year running the Chase the Gorilla Down Argilla 5k. That’s insane. But I love this race.
Here are my previous race results (thanks internet):
- 2009 – 26:04 (8:25 min/mile)
- 2010 – 28:30 (9:12 min/mile)
- 2012 – 28:22 (9:14 min/mile)
- 2013 – 28:37 (9:14 min/mile)
- 2014 – 25:12 (8:07 min/mile – PR!)
- 2016 – 25:20 (8:10 min/mile – so close to another PR)
The Chase the Gorilla Down Argilla 5k race course is one I obviously one I run well one. This is funny because it’s NOT flat and there are something like 14 left and right turns.
My pre-race fuel plan was the exact same as last week when I ran the Sprint into Sprint 5k – a cherry Larabar and iced coffee. Larabars work really well for before running.

Yeah, I’m a psychopath about numbers so I track my races on both RunKeeper and my Apple Watch. Both of these I start and stop to the best of my abilities so I know they aren’t completely accurate.
After a week of almost no exercise, I expected to either feel awful while running or to be excessively slow. I was actually quite happy with splits and that I didn’t feel awful while running.
I had no interest in trying to PR on this race or do anything special but I definitely didn’t expect these negative splits. Yay me!
Out of 400 people, I finished at 116 (top 30% – I’ll take it) and in my age group, I came in 19 out of 86 (top 25%).
This was our friend Kelly’s first ever 5k and she killed it. Even though she said she thought she was going to throw up after. She didn’t. Congrats Kelly!
After the race, we invited our friends back to our house and made waffles, bacon and eggs for breakfast. The perfect post-race refuel.
I love the Chase the Gorilla Down Argilla 5k race and hope to run it for years to come.
