Good morning and happy not Monday! It feels like a Monday because yesterday was a holiday for me which meant 3 day weekend! Now that the weekend is over and it is back to real life, I wanted to start this week with a Biz focused post.
Recently I was running a meeting and teaching people all the things they needed to know about social media and tracking web traffic in Google Analytics. I was spouting my knowledge like a boss when one of my meeting-mates stopped me and said,
How do you know all of this?
Cue my silence…
I immediately went into imposter syndrome induced panic.
How did I know this? Do I know this? Am I just a big fat phony?
No, I’m not. I know my shit and I life teaching people what I know.
- When your mind plays vicious games with you and you dismiss your amazing accomplishment and chalk them up to luck, timing or tricking people by making them think you are smarter and more competent than you really are.
It’s that feeling when you think that if a “real” expert came in, they would tear your shit apart.
Imposter syndrome is bullshit and there are ways to tell your mind to shut it and move on.
- Realize you are dealing with it.
Once you recognize that you are starting to doubt yourself and your intelligence, stop it. Stop it right in its tracks.
- Internalize positive feedback.
If/when you get a compliment, celebrate that shit! Then move on and continue to learn and be awesome (no resting on those laurels)
- Steer clear of words like “only,” “simply,” “just.”
How many times have you said, “Well I only just did this one little thing,” when in reality you worked super hard for weeks to get that thing in place? Stop minimizing your work and your effort. You need to be your best advocate so step up!
- Ask for help.
Yes, you are amazing and have a wealth of knowledge but you don’t know it all. When you do get stumped, don’t try to bullshit your way through it, ask for help! Teaching people what you know is amazing but learning more from others and staying ahead of the curve is even more important.
STOP IMPOSTER SYDROME! Oh, and happy Tuesday!
