I love a small, well organized local race. And having a 5k in our town on a Tuesday night sounded like a great date night for SL and I. The Summer Solstice 5k in Ipswich perfectly fit the bill; it was small, well organized and had a great route throughout my home town.
I love weeknight races because there is no early morning weekend wake up, there are usually smaller crowds and you can get a drink after without feeling guilty for day drinking! SL and I have been Ipswich residences for almost two years and have been trying to do all the super local things this beautiful town has to offer.
I don’t remember how I heard about the Summer Solstice 5k but I remember signing up for it right away. I knew there was a possibility of it being warm out (hello summer!) but I never thought it would be as hot it is was.
Summer Solstice 5k Race Recap
I went into this race without a goal time in mind. It was HOT, still in the 80s when the race started. I have been struggling with running in heat this year so I knew I wanted to finish without walking.
- Mile 1 – 8:49 min/mile
The first mile was really fun as the race shut down the streets downtown for the runners. It was really cool running through my town without worrying about dodging cars on the street or pedestrians on the sidewalk. I felt good in the first mile but wanted to slow down a bit so I didn’t bonk.
- Mile 2 – 9:10 min/mile
SL and I have run this mile before and it has some very scenic parts. It also has shade which was a life saver. There was also a nice breeze during mile two. It was a warm breeze so not super refreshing but better than stagnant air.
- Mile 3 – 9:37 min/mile
I grabbed a bottle of water at the only water stop (just before the mile marker) and held on to it for all of the third mile. I was parched and needed to hydrate. I felt like a struggle bus for all of mile three. Woof.
- Last little bit (ended up being 0.24 miles*) – 8:36 min/mile
My RunKeeper app said the distance was 3.24 so when I passed the 3-mile marker, I picked up the pace thinking I only had 0.1 miles lefts. Turned out, I had 0.24 miles so that was a struggle. This was also may favorite part of the race.
RunKeeper Results: 3.24 miles // 29:44 mins // 9:10 min/mile
Office Race Time: 3.1 miles // 29:34 mins // 9:33 min/mile
Sooooo I earned myself a PW (personal worst). This was my slowest race EVER. Like ever. But I finished without walking despite the heat.
SL, was slower than his usual self but still crushed it. #proudwife
We stuck around for the free beer (for SL) and watched the awards ceremony. It always amazes me how fast the winner run. Sub-6 minute miles will never be something I will do and I am just fine with that.
Despite my slow race times, I really enjoyed running the Summer Solstice 5k and will definitely run it again in the future.
